Speeding is a factor in 30 percent of all crashes in the United States, killing more than 1,000 motorists each month. Teen driver crashes are more likely to involve speeding that older drivers

There are three primary ways that speeding affects the risk of crashing and resulting injuries:

  • Increases the distance traveled from the time the driver identifies a hazard until the time he or she reacts
  • Increases the distance needed to stop the vehicle
  • Increases the amount of crash energy absorbed by the vehicle and occupants
